Scotts Miracle-Gro launched GRO1000 to create 1,000 gardens and green spaces across Canada, the United States and Europe by 2018. The last installation will be completed in 2018, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the founding of Scotts Miracle-Gro.

Since 2011, more than 518 grants have been awarded throughout the world. Scotts Canada Ltd. – a subsidiary of Scotts Miracle-Gro Company – has partnered with Communities in Bloom, Plant a Row — Grow a Row, and Nutrients for Life with the aim of bringing together national and local groups to collectively advocate for and demonstrate the benefits of gardening and green space development and to unite people around a common project.

Through the development of community gardens, the GRO1000 initiative encourages and provides a mechanism to directly address the challenge of hunger and access to fresh produce in participating communities by donating a portion of each community garden harvest to a local food-distribution organization. By encouraging harvest donation, GRO1000 edible gardens, serve as a visible reminder to give back to those less fortunate.

Communities that join Scotts Miracle-Gro and its partners in the development of community gardens and green spaces will also reap the environmental, social and physical benefits commonly associated with environmental enhancements such as offsetting pollution, increased physical activity and lower stress. Studies have also shown vandalism decreases noticeably in communities, neighborhoods and housing projects where landscaping projects are promoted.

The GRO1000 initiative is an integral program within the Scotts Miracle-Gro “Give Back To Gro” philanthropy platform. The Company is dedicated not only to the development of gardens and green spaces but also overall environmental stewardship.

About Plant a Row • Grow a Row
Plant a Row · Grow a Row builds on the long-standing tradition of gardeners loving to share their harvest with others. The program, which has its roots in many communities in North America, launched nationally in the Year 2000 thanks to a joint partnership between the Garden Writers Association, the Compost Council of Canada and local food banks across Canada. Relying on the passion of volunteers and the reality that once the harvest comes in there are always extras, Plant a Row · Grow a Row combines the passion of gardening —and in particular, the ever-growing interest in veggie gardening – and the importance of sharing food with neighbours-in-need to create local connections that are helping make our communities and neighbourhoods stronger.
